"Most training focuses on the play.
Competition tests how athletes manage the play.
Intentional training prepares them for both."
When training doesn’t match the reality of competition
Execution in competition requires more than simply running the play. Athletes must process information quickly, recall assignments, adjust to changing situations, and reset after mistakes.

These demands are a normal part of performance.

But training often emphasizes the play itself without fully supporting the demands athletes must manage while executing it. When those demands aren’t addressed in training, performance becomes inconsistent. Two athletes might make the same mistake for completely different reasons. One may not have fully learned the information during the week. Another may know the assignment but struggle to reset after a mistake.

-
Two different demands.
-
Two different training needs.

Most performance mistakes aren’t simply execution problems. They often reveal preparation gaps.

Understanding those gaps is the first step to helping training translate to competition.
